Lash Prep: How to Cleanse Lashes Before Extensions for Perfect Application & Retention
Proper lash prep is the foundation of great eyelash extension results. A thorough, oil-free cleanse removes makeup, sunscreen, sebum and dust so your adhesive bonds cleanly and your client enjoys long-lasting retention. Always cleanse before every full set and infill.
What You’ll Need (Lash Prep Kit)
-
Lash-safe foaming cleanser (oil-free)
-
Cleansing brush (soft, dense bristles)
-
Rinse bottle (distilled/sterile water, room temp)
-
Lash drying fan (cool/low)
-
Lint-free pads or cotton rounds (watch for lint)
Pro tip: swap fluffy cotton for lint-free pads to avoid fibres catching on natural lashes.
Step-by-Step: How to Cleanse Lashes
-
Explain & protect: Let your client know you’ll be cleansing. Ask them to keep eyes closed; place a pad under the lower lashes if you prefer.
-
Dispense cleanser: Pump a small amount into the lid or a ring. Dip your cleansing brush into the foam.
-
Clean top & underside: Using gentle, downward strokes, cleanse the lashes, eyelids, and under the lash line. Work from root to tip; small circular motions along the lash line help break down makeup.
-
Remove residue: Wipe away foam with a lint-free pad.
-
Rinse thoroughly: Use your rinse bottle to flush both eyes, ensuring no cleanser remains (leftover surfactants can affect bonding).
-
Check & repeat: If you still see mascara, eyeliner, SPF or oil, repeat the cleanse until the lashes are squeaky clean.
-
Dry completely: Use your lash drying fan on cool/low until lashes are fully dry and fluffy. Proceed with priming/isolation and application.
Why Cleansing Matters (Fast Science)
-
Oils + makeup = weak bond and early shed
-
Clean, dry surfaces = stronger adhesion and smoother fan wrap
-
Consistent prep = better retention and fewer “my lashes fell out” messages
Common Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)
-
Stinging/tearing: Rinse longer with room-temp water; use less cleanser and keep eyes closed.
-
Foam won’t clear: You’re under-rinsing—flush more thoroughly and blot with a clean pad.
-
Makeup residue at the base: Focus tiny circular motions along the lash line and repeat cleanse.
-
Lint on lashes: Switch to lint-free pads or sponges.
Client Aftercare Reminder (for your script)
“Cleanse daily with a lash-safe cleanser, brush lightly mid-lengths to tips, sleep on a silk pillowcase, and book infills every 2–3 weeks for best retention.”
